The Project

18 freelance illustrators put their enthusiasm, ideas and concerns about Europe into art works and donate the 20 originals to Pulse of Europe for auction for our work. Markus Weber, Moritz Verlag Frankfurt am Main, had the generous idea.

Europe concerns everyone, everyone can participate in Pulse of Europe and so more has come of it: the works are now on an exhibition tour through major European cities. Thanks to all involved!

“Everyone can draw a personal diagram of any kind of connections (professional, family, love, sport, etc.) that he has to the countries and people of Europe. That would result in a different pattern for each of us. But it is not the pattern that is important, but thinking about how I am personally connected with Europe in order to make such an identification conscious. 28 countries, connect yourself!”

“After an experience in Edinburgh (Scotland), I thought it was time for a European heraldic animal. There, the consulates of some European countries were decorated with flags – including those of the EU. When I spoke to my companion about it, she said that this was very nice, but what does the blue flag with the yellow stars stand for?”

Europe, the unique peace project


And now more than ever: blossoming and bearing fruit together!

Cross-border understanding, solidarity and peace are of great concern to me. Only together can we live well and safely and take care of the urgent problems of our environment.


“I see Europe like a protective patchwork quilt. It is colourful and diverse and consists of many small individual parts that have been added little by little. Stitched together, it offers protection, security and a certain amount of self-confidence to those it envelops. What happens when a patch comes off?
Europe is a bringer of peace not only for us “original Europeans”. People who have fled to us also find protection here and can (hopefully) feel that they belong. I grew up in a peaceful, even borderless Europe. Sometimes I forget that this long period of peaceful coexistence cannot be taken for granted. To recall from time to time what a great task the European Union has mastered – namely the lasting peace in Europe and the friendly solidarity of its countries – instead of just getting annoyed about the smallness of some EU regulations is very salutary from time to time.”

Stories connect – Alexander Steffensmeier

“When I think of Europe, I always think of the great diversity, but also of the many things we have in common. For example, it is not only history that connects us with our neighboring countries, but also the stories. And especially the stories for children.
Some of our most popular fairy tales come from France or Denmark. And how many German childhoods have not been enriched by story excursions in Astrid Lindgren’s Sweden?
This is the thought I want to express with the book as a bridge, which I designed for a German-Danish children’s book week.Einige unserer beliebtesten Märchen stammen ja aus Frankreich oder Dänemark. Und wie viele deutsche Kindheiten wurden nicht schon durch Geschichten-Ausflüge in Astrid Lindgrens Schweden bereichert?
Diesen Gedanken soll mein Motiv mit dem Buch als Brücke, das ich für eine deutsch-dänische Kinderbuchwoche gestaltet hatte, zum Ausdruck bringen.”

“I believe that every state within the EU is important. Acting together makes you strong. Conversely, of course, it weakens when one country (in this case the balloon with the flag of GB) leaves the alliance. Does it really make sense to define that a Pizza Napoletana can be a maximum of four centimetres thin and 35 centimetres in diameter? But for all the strange, cumbersome and annoying things, one thing is clear: we have moved closer together. For more than 70 years, Europe has been spared wars, we discuss and talk to each other. We should be aware of that. I think it’s great to have the opportunity to express our appreciation of Europe in our own small setting.”

“The peace project Europe is in difficult waters. But that was never, in all honesty. different. Only memory paints the good old days well. Surely not everything is perfect. Not everything that I would like to have is realised by the EU.
And there are also many Europeans in this boat whom I do not like – and who certainly do not like me. But we will settle this here in conversation and according to democratic rules. That makes me and all these people free and gives us endless possibilities. So I hope that everyone will remember to keep the boat seaworthy – and that you don’t let anybody drown in the wide sea. I am taking part in the exhibition because the idea convinced me to see the always somewhat abstract subject of Europe from different, very personal angles. Often the critics of the project Europe achieve media air sovereignty. We citizens of Europe gain a great deal and talk about it too rarely. But both belong together, so that the common Europe can continue to grow. I look forward to the contributions of my colleagues.”

“My contribution is a remix of the painting “Charity” by William-Adolphe Bouguereau from 1878, which for me shows Europe, as a young mother, stripping away the bloody world wars of the last century, gathering the young democracies around her like children searching for freedom, warmth, contentment and security.
I am taking part in the exhibition because Europe has a future for me only as an open and free multinational entity. In the long run, nationalism and segregation have only benefited elites and not the people. It is important to show again and again that diversity is a greater richness than national fundamentalism. I hope that the exhibition will show a wide range of ideas and views of Europe in order to give this richness a face and to inspire people for it.”

“There are many attempts to sabotage the EU at the moment. Be it through nationalists and populists, the Brexit or disagreement over migration policy.
The work “Europa Rodeo” deals with these various threats to the European project, symbolised by the banderillas used in bullfighting, which are used to attack the bull in order to make it throw off Europe. What concerns me is that a possible break-up of Europe could threaten not only prosperity, cultural exchange and uncomplicated travel, but also the peace that has now lasted for over seven decades. In the context of the exhibition, I would like to contribute with my work to the awareness of the vulnerability of the European Union and the fact that difficult times lie ahead, marked by confrontation and possible violence.”

“The topic of Europe primarily invites critical debate. Observation of the national and international press reinforces my impression that, despite the cultural diversity in the European area, many hurdles must be overcome by all Member States. Predominantly, the market economy seems to be in the focus of the reporting. This in no way reflects the great potential at the cultural level.
In my opinion, a union of different cultures is only enriching when the differences can be celebrated. On the other hand, many points of contention can arise in the process. Overcoming them requires a great deal of diplomacy and sensitivity at the political level. Everybody has to dance the dance, despite the differences.”

“I support this exhibition because it is time to confront the anti-European movements and the Brexit. Especially the Brexit vote has saddened me lately. My picture is meant to illustrate various feelings, but above all melancholy in the face of the Brexit (underlined by song titles of the Stones). And we can already say now: “You can’t always get what you want”, “Miss you!” and maybe hopefully: “Tell me you’re coming back!””

“Actually I wanted to draw something very positive, but the more I thought about European peace, the more disputes and disagreements came to my mind. That’s why I think a dove of peace, with a few Europeans in a headlock to help them come to their senses, is a very appropriate idea.
I find the idea of winning over children’s book illustrators, who are actually rather apolitical in their work, to a political theme interesting. I was curious to see what the result would be and I’m even more curious to see what the others came up with.”


“The drawing is a watercoloured ink drawing and depicts the Westphalian Peace Rider with Europe.
I have depicted the Peace Rider in the process of handing over the possible/public peace treaty to Europe. The plant tendrils can be interpreted in two directions. On the one hand as a symbol for a process of change towards something more hopeful and beautiful. But also as undergrowth which restricts and hinders Europe in its actions. I have added a few more plants, such as oaks, almond blossoms, the olive branch and grapes, as symbols of hospitality, peace and prosperity.”

„Die Zähmung des Wesens, welches wir Europa nennen, ist schwerer als gedacht. Aber wir sollten nichts unversucht lassen, Europa zu stärken, in der Hoffnung, dass es immer bei uns bleibt! Taming the fabulous creature we call Europe is difficult – even harder than we imagined. Still, we must make every effort to strengthen Europe, in the hope that it will stay!
There are no simple solutions to the problems facing our world today. It is vitally important the future of people and planet, that each and every person do whatever it is they can, matter how small the contribution. We must not lose hope – a united Europe is the only we have!“
